Melissa Schmidt

St.louis, MO Medium:Jewelry Booth:GN27 Artist Website Email Melissa Schmidt

Born in Saint Louis Missouri in 1969, to Fine Arts Majors at Washington University, her family relocated
to Honolulu, Hawaii and later to San Francisco, California where Melissa Schmidt began her arts
education at San Francisco City College with a Metal Arts and Fashion major. After moving to back to
Saint Louis she switched majors to Interior Design. To indulge her need for a more creative and less
technical outlet, she began making jewelry on the side. Primarily self taught, a 2 day intensive glass
bead making class with Sam Stang changed everything. Then after a decade of making glass beads,
teaching at Craft Alliance, University City Missouri and selling her jewelry at local art fairs, she took a
private lesson from Debra Katon for the sole purpose of learning to blow small glass bubbles inspired
by 100 + year old blown glass buttons she found in an antique store. When the time presented itself
she split from her career to her true passion where she was warmly received and continues to flourish
and delight her art jewelry supporters.
Melissa's work has been included in the Racine Art Museum’s 50 years of studio glass exhibition and is
being represented by Morgan Contemporary Glass Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA. and Gravers Lane Gallery
in Philadelphia, PA. Her work is also currently at the Smithsonian Renwick and Smithsonian Portrait
Gallery Museum shops and Saint Louis Art Museum. Melissa's work is fueled by a direct response to
people's concept of what glass can and can't do. Her work has been exhibited at Craft Alliance's
Biennial Faculty Show. She has won jewelry awards, and her work has been published in Ornament Magazine and others
