My work reflects my background as an environmental attorney and fine woodworker. The natural world and the places and ways in which we interact with, subjugate and celebrate nature are the inspiration for my work. This body of mixed media encaustic work began as a series about the cages we build for ourselves that do not actually hold us—job, marriage, place, education. They contain stones, found objects, wood, plant material and steel cable; natural elements in juxtaposition with man-made elements. Color and texture in the painting may emphasize one or the other, or the tension between the two. Though abstract in nature, they elicit so many emotions from viewers that they have taken on a life of their own. I paint on Ampersand Encausticbord panels and create the insets myself. I paint with encaustic and use oils, graphite, dry pigments and paper to add texture, complexity and depth.
