Recalling Place - Gallery Opening Reception

Announcing #DMAFcurated, a prequel exhibition to the Des Moines Arts Festival®, presented by Silent Rivers Design+Build and Mars Café, featuring a curated sneak peek at Festival artists.

The selected work from ten exhibiting artists highlights thematic alignments throughout the Festival, and fosters additional narrative and meaning between pieces that might be missed, if not seen collectively.

The inaugural show, titled "Recalling Place," is curated by Silent Rivers' owner, Chaden Halfhill. This snippet from the curatorial statement offers a glimpse of what you’ll see in this gallery. ”Whether delving into individual or cultural memory, or accentuating the physical context for individual or community narrative, these artists elevate and reflect our collective relationship within built space, the fabric of our homes, neighborhoods, towns and cities. This reflection similarly reinforces our internal space -- that subconscious recollection of who we are and where we come from – while soliciting a pause to consider how our environments shape our future."

“Recalling Place” will include selected works by Benjamin Frey, Kristen Greteman, Clifton Henri, John Leben, Igor Menaker, Larry Simon, Marina Terauds, Nha Vuu, Timothy White and R. Michael Wommack. The exhibition opens at Mars Café May 12 and will be showcased there until June 21, at which time it will be transported to The Festival Salon, where it will be set up in preparation for Festival weekend.

We hope you’ll take advantage of this opportunity to get a sneak peek at a selection of our exhibiting artists. Join us on May 19 from 6 -8 p.m. for a special opening reception at Mars Café (2318 University Ave. in Des Moines) and hear first-hand how this idea came to be.
