4-H Youth Development - Iowa State University Extension and Outreach

4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential through youth-adult partnerships and research-based experiences. 4-H youth programs provide opportunities for youth to develop skills they can use now and throughout their life. Iowa 4-H builds upon a century of experience as it fosters positive youth development that is based on the needs and strengths of youth, their families, and communities.

Arts Activity: Learn the art of cyanotype printing and expose a cyanotype in the sun or light box.

AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transport, Inc.

AHeinz57 Pet Rescue is a unique rescue organization that exists to bridge the gap between traditional animal shelters and no-kill rescue centers. They are committed to saving homeless companion animals, assisting other shelters/rescues through rescue transports, offering in-home training to keep dogs in their current homes, and educating the public on the issues of pet over-population, and responsible pet ownership and puppy mills.

Arts Activity: Make a homemade fleece dog toy for your favorite dog!

Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc.

The mission of The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is to promote animal welfare, strengthen the human animal bond and prevent the overpopulation of pets.

Arts Activity: Make an animal mask with a cut out of either a cat, dog or rabbit!

Blank Park Zoo

The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education and recreation.

Arts Activity: Assemble a butterfly, or create a “seed bomb” where you roll seeds for a butterfly garden into a ball of clay.

Class Act Productions Community Theatre Inc.

Class Act Productions (CAP Theatre) is a children's community theatre which has performed nearly 40 musicals in the past 10 years in old town Altoona. They strive to give young people, regardless of experience, the opportunity to express themselves and perform in front of a live audience and learn theatre etiquette. They also encourage community involvement and growing relationships between CAP and the areas it serves.

Arts Activity: Take photos and videos in a photo/ video booth with costumes, props and backgrounds for people to recite plays and musicals.

Community Support Advocates

CSA was formed to assist persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, or other developmental disabilities in gaining access to appropriate housing, needed medical services, and interrelated social, vocational, and educational services. CSA's Momentum programs promote the use of art for growth and recovery by offering free art services to individuals with disabilities in Central Iowa.

Arts Activity: Make your very own fan out of paper plates and popsicle sticks and then use it as a puppet at home – Create your own art and keep cool with it!

Des Moines Downtown Chamber

The Downtown Chamber of Commerce is a community of businesses and non-profits focused on Downtown vitality. Their mission is to be providers of knowledge sharing, foster an environment of civility, and educate on economic issues.

Arts Activity: Cut a ribbon to celebrate the opening of your new business! You can also create coupons and discuss sales tactics for your business.

Des Moines European Heritage Association

Des Moines European Heritage Association connects Iowans with European traditions, language education and cultural experiences; and they provide cultural heritage organizations with resources and tools to maintain and grow their memberships.

Arts Activity: Create your very own Christmas ornament.

 Des Moines Social Club

The Des Moines Social Club provides a home for local artists, offers unique programming spanning all arts disciplines, and brings people of every age and background together under one roof, all for the purpose of using the arts as a catalyst to create unprecedented community engagement.

Arts Activity: Design a button so you can wear your new artwork all day long.

Eyerly Ball Community Mental Health Services

The goal at Eyerly Ball is to provide excellent behavioral healthcare services that empower individuals and families to live healthy and successful lives in the community.  They offer a variety of levels of behavioral health services and have locations in 5 counties

Arts Activity: Tie-dye a cloth and get your face painted!

Food Bank of Iowa

Food Bank of Iowa is dedicated to alleviating hunger through food distribution, partnership, and education. They work with about 400 partner agencies and operate direct service programs designed to provide food to those in need throughout our 55-county service area.

Arts Activity: Create your own hunger tree to start combatting and finding a solution to hunger. You can also create an acrostic with your name and brainstorm foods that start with each letter.

Greater Des Moines Music Coalition

The Des Moines Music Coalition (DMMC) is a collaborative movement committed to building a stronger and more diverse music community in greater Des Moines. Their mission is to support and cultivate Iowa’s music economy, their vision is to establish and maintain Des Moines as a nationally recognized music city.

Arts Activity: Make your own unicorn horn and transform into a unicorn as you can wear your new art piece. You can also take a photo and post it on social media to enter in a contest for a prize!

HCI Care Services & Visiting Nurses Services

The mission of HCI Care Services is to promote dignity, independence and quality of life for all through education, compassion and effective community-based care.

Arts Activity: Create and decorate a book of memories to honor a loved one.

Iowa Dance Theatre

Iowa Dance Theatre  is a group of cooperating dance educators and choreographers who promote dance as a performing art.   We strive to provide students and professionals with opportunities to work in a company atmosphere emphasizing ensemble work that values cooperation.  

Arts Activity: Dance, Color or complete a mini obstacle course.

Iowa Donor Network

Iowa Donor Network (IDN) is a non-profit organization that operates as the primary contact for organ, tissue and eye donation services for the state of Iowa. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have certified IDN to function as the single organ procurement agency in the state.

Arts Activity: Help paint a canvas focused on a daily question on “life,” “love” or “legacy” or do a craft with a prompt of “What fills your heart?” and create a design in a heart.

Iowa Youth Chorus

Iowa Youth Chorus is an educational and artistic organization dedicated to enriching the intellectual and philosophical quality of life for our community for this and future generations.

Arts Activity: Create your own tambourine.

Pulse 101.7FM

Pulse 101.7 is a non-profit Christian music radio station that serves the Des Moines metro area with music with a positive, upbeat message.

Arts Activity: Print your thumbprint on a piece of paper then create an image using your print.

Salsa Des Moines

Salsa Des Moines provides high quality dance education experiences for all ages and levels in order to expand the dancer community through technique and knowledge. They coordinate with local organizations, institutions, and venues to provide social dancing opportunities for the community and the students.

Arts Activity: Free dance lessons for learning Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba, Argentine Tango, and Cha Cha.

Walnut Creek Church

Walnut Creek Church is a vibrant multi-site Christian community that is passionate about Jesus and desires to love people practically and see all grow in a meaningful, rich relationship with God.

Arts Activity: Get engaged with art history by taking your photo with a famous piece of art, and then receive a printed picture with facts about the artist and their artwork.
